Patio Covers & Outdoor Kitchens On The Texas Gulf Coast

The best backyards don’t end at the water. Shade for August afternoons, a kitchen where the cook isn’t missing the party, and a place to sit when the sun goes down. Designed with the pool, built as one backyard.

Outdoor Living

Outdoor Living Builder For League City, Pearland, Friendswood & Alvin

A pool gets used for a few hours at a time. A backyard with shade, seating and a place to cook gets used every evening from March through November. That’s the difference between a pool and an outdoor living space.

Draeger designs patio covers, outdoor kitchens and gathering areas alongside the pool, in the same 3D design, so sightlines, drainage, gas, water and electrical are planned once and built once. If your pool is already in, or is a few years away, we design the outdoor living space with that in mind, too.

One design. One builder. One backyard that works together.

Patio Covers Built For Texas Heat & Gulf Storms

Shade is not optional here. A patio cover turns the hottest part of the yard into the part you actually use, protects the outdoor kitchen and furniture, and can cut the glare and heat coming through the back windows of the house.

  • Attached and freestanding covers designed to match the roofline and materials of your home
  • Engineered for wind and rain, with proper attachment, flashing and drainage, not a kit set on posts
  • Ceiling fans, lighting, heaters and speakers wired in during construction
  • Cedar, stucco, stone and painted finishes selected to complement the pool and the house

Outdoor Kitchens Designed Around How You Cook & Host

An outdoor kitchen should be laid out like an indoor one: where the grill sits relative to the seating, how far the refrigerator is from the bar, whether the smoke blows toward the pool or away from it. We design the kitchen around how your family cooks and entertains, then build it to hold up outdoors.

  • Built-in grills, side burners, smokers and pizza ovens with gas lines run during construction
  • Sinks, refrigeration, ice makers and storage with water, drain and power in place
  • Bar seating and counter surfaces chosen for sun, heat and salt air near the bay
  • Stone, stucco and tile finishes that tie the kitchen to the pool and patio

Plan The Whole Backyard At Once

The most common regret we hear about is a backyard built in pieces: a pool one year, a cover a few years later, a kitchen after that, each by a different contractor and none of them planned for the others. Utilities end up in the wrong place. Decks don’t line up. The result looks like three projects instead of one.

Designing the pool, spa, cover and kitchen together, even if they’re built in phases, means the plans, permits and utilities are right the first time and the finished backyard reads as one design.

Common Questions

Patio Cover & Outdoor Kitchen FAQs

Do you build patio covers and outdoor kitchens without a pool?
Yes. Patio covers and outdoor kitchens can be planned as standalone projects or as part of a pool build. If a pool is in your future, though, it’s worth talking about both at the same time, even if the pool comes later, so the cover, kitchen, drainage and utilities are placed where the pool will eventually go.
What kind of patio cover holds up best on the Gulf Coast?
One that is engineered for wind and attached properly to the house. Hurricane-season wind loads, heavy rain and relentless summer sun are the conditions a cover has to survive here. The structure, the roof material, the fasteners and how the cover ties into your existing roofline all matter more than the style you choose, and all of it is part of the design and permit.
Does an outdoor kitchen need gas, water and electrical?
Usually all three. A grill or side burner needs a gas line, a sink needs water and a drain, and a refrigerator, lighting and outlets need power. Running those utilities is far simpler before the deck and pool are poured than after, which is why we plan the kitchen alongside the pool whenever both are on the table.
Do patio covers and outdoor kitchens require permits?
In most cities and counties on the Gulf Coast, an attached patio cover and any project with gas, electrical or plumbing work require permits and inspections, and many neighborhoods require HOA approval as well. We coordinate that documentation as part of the project.
